This is a test

I'm testing to see if my Posterous account is correctly linked to Facebook.

If this had been an actual emergency, you would have been instructed where to tune in your area for news and official information.

How did you first hear about Bin Laden's death?

I subscribe to Breaking News posts on Facebook and was on Facebook Sunday evening when they posted that Obama was going to address the nation, but the subject matter was unknown. That sounded ominous so we turned on Fox News and went back and forth between Fox News and CNN since they were both speculating about the announcement. The speculation ranged from a possible nuclear or biological attack on the U.S. to Gaddifi's demise in Libya. Like nearly everyone, I was pleased that the Pentagon confirmed Bin Laden's death before Obama addressed the nation.

Facebook needs a new filter!

Since social gaming has really taken off on Facebook, my wall is now cluttered with updates from my FarmVille and FrontierVille neighbors. This is fine as I actively play both games, but my neighbors are also Facebook friends and I'm interested in their non-gaming posts and status updates.

I use Facebook Lists and all my FarmVille/FrontierVille neighbors are in one list called "Neighbors."  However, I have not figured out a way to filter out the gaming posts in this List to see their regular posts.

Is there any way to do this or should this be another Facebook feature request?? There is a filter called "Games," but there should also be a filter called "Non-Games."

Where do you turn for news?

Like a lot of Americans, I was tuned to the cable news networks last Tuesday night as the election results came in. However, I was also monitoring my iPhone Twitter app to see the latest news for my home state. That got me wondering: Where does everyone go for news these days?

Twenty years ago, we would have been watching the major networks for election coverage. Now, I am not even sure they covered the elections except for local elections during commercial breaks. The networks long ago ceded news coverage to Fox News and CNN.

I personally follow Twitter for breaking news. Twitter came of age to me as a legitimate news source on January 15, 2009, when U.S. Airways flight 1549 crash landed into the Hudson River. Twitter user Janis Krums was on a ferry and took the first grainy photo of the jet as it floated on the water. He tweeted the photo and within seconds it went viral before the news channels had the information. I have since created multiple Twitter lists and monitor them for news events ranging from the LeBron James hype, to elections, to following my favorite sporting teams. I rely on it heavily, especially now that I have a smartphone.

Jkrums

Another good source of news is the Flickr photo-sharing service. Back in 2007, terrorists set off bombs in the London subways. Within an hour, amateur photojournalists uploaded photos to Flickr and shared them worldwide. I still go to Flickr for many news events although it is slower to update, obviously, than Twitter. Shuttle launches are especially fun to follow on Flickr.

Facebook is another good source although many news organizations simply update their Facebook page from their Twitter feed.

Where do you get your news information?

Seesmic Desktop 2 Preview

This evening I downloaded the preview release of Seesmic Desktop. This new version -- written in Silverlight -- allows you to connect to Twitter and Facebook as well as a number of other social networks. Since it's a preview release, not all of the functionality is there yet.

Overall I like it a lot, but I do have some issues:

  1. I have a number of Twitter user lists. I displayed three or four lists. I left the computer for a couple of hours and, upon my return, I reopened Seesmic and they were all missing. I had to go in and redisplay them. This happens in the original Seesmic Desktop and Seesmic for Windows. Very annoying!
  2. Even though I have a large monitor, screen space is at a premium and the left menu column takes up a lot of space. Previous versions of Seesmic allowed you to minimize the column. It would be appreciated here too. Auto or manual resizing of columns would be appreciated too.
  3. The plugin directory doesn't work, but I assume it's because it's not the final release.
  4. No support yet for Ping.fm, but they say it's coming. Makes sense as Seesmic owns Ping.fm.
The look is very elegant (if that's the right description to use). Seesmic and Tweetdeck are the top two desktop Twitter/Facebook platforms and each company release ups the ante.

Try the new preview release of Seesmic Desktop here.

Microsoft Docs

I just signed up for Microsoft Docs at www.docs.com. This is a new service currently in Beta that works with Facebook to share documents (Word docs, Excel and Powerpoint) within the Facebook platform. They are now accepting invitations so I have been unable to use the service. Apparently you need Office 2010 to be able to upload and download files to your computer. That might be a limiting factor for many. Does anyone know if Office 2007 will be supported?
